Woodrow Wilson’s Birthday, Family and Early Life

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28th, 1856 in the city of Staunton, Virginia, in the United States. Wilson’s father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was a Presbyterian minister who had moved to Virginia from Ohio and was the son of Scotch-Irish immigrants. Wilson’s mother, Janet Woodrow, was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and had been born in England of Scottish parentage. Both of Wilson’s parents were of Presbyterian ancestry. Since Andrew Jackson, Woodrow Wilson was the only president to have a father who was born outside of the United States.

“Tommy” Wilson’s childhood was heavily influenced by the Presbyterian church, which was only natural given the nature of his name. His family moved out of Virginia before he turned two years old because his father was called to serve as a pastor in Augusta, Georgia, and then Wilmington, North Carolina, before taking a teaching position at Columbia Theological Seminary in South Carolina. After graduating from college, the young man changed his name to Woodrow Wilson in order to highlight the familial link and also because he believed that the name “Woodrow Wilson” sounded more respectable. His uncle, James Woodrow, was the most influential member of the seminary faculty. His grandfather was a minister who served as a chaplain for the Confederate army during the American Civil War. During that time, his church in Augusta was used as a military hospital. The horrors of war had a profound effect on the younger version of President Wilson.

Woodrow Wilson’s Biography, Career/Education and Achievements

Wilson did not start reading until after he was 10 years old and he never developed into a fast reader. Despite this, he acquired strong passions for both literature and politics. Before enrolling at what is now Princeton University in 1875, he spent one year studying at Davidson College, which is located close to Charlotte, North Carolina. Intellectually, he flourished when he was at Princeton. He read extensively, participated in vigorous discussion, and edited the school newspaper. While he was still a student, he wrote an academic article that made a comparison between the parliamentary system of the United Kingdom and the government of the United States of America. This was a topic that he would later expand upon in his first book and use in his own political career.
