William Howard Taft was the 27th President of the United States (1909–13) and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States. He was born on September 15, 1857, in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the United States, and he passed away on March 8, 1930, in Washington, District of Columbia (1921–30). Theodore Roosevelt had chosen William Howard Taft to succeed him as president and carry on the progressive Republican agenda.

However, Taft as president alienated the progressives, and later Roosevelt as well, which contributed greatly to the split in Republican ranks in 1912, to the formation of the Bull Moose Party (also known as the Progressive Party), and to his humiliating defeat that year in his bid for a second term in office.

He was the first President to ever pick up the game of golf. Some western voters, particularly those who linked Taft’s Unitarianism with atheism, found the fact that he played golf to be vulgar or even immoral. Because of his passion for the game, golf saw a boom throughout the country, which led to an increase in the number of players on public courses. Critics believed that Taft would have been better served politically if he spent less time on the courses and more time working in the White House, thus they called for him to reduce the amount of time he spent golfing during his administration.

Grant, and Louisa Maria Torrey, graduated second in his Yale class in 1878, studied law, and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1880. Taft was the son of Alphonso Taft, who married Louisa Maria Torrey. After becoming interested in politics and joining the Republican Party, he first held a series of insignificant appointive positions until the year 1887, when he was selected to complete the unexpired term of a judge on the superior court of Ohio. He was elected to a five-year term of his own the following year, the only time he ever reached office by popular vote other than his election to the President.

This tenure would last for a total of five years. Between the years 1892 and 1900, he was a judge on the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. During his tenure there, he issued a number of opinions that were unfavorable to organized labor. He affirmed the use of an injunction to end a strike by railroad employees and he made the use of a secondary boycott unlawful by declaring it to be against the law. On the other hand, he defended the rights of employees to organize, to join a union, and to strike, and he enlarged the authority of the injunction to enforce antitrust laws. In this regard, he was a proponent of labor rights.
