Sinclair was a player with Wellington from the 1955–1956 season all the way through the 1970–1971 season. His maiden century came in the 1963–1964 season when Wellington faced Northern Districts. His highest score in first-class competition was 148, out of a total of 365 for 7 on an opening day, which he achieved while captaining Wellington against the Australians in the 1966–1967 season.

Although Sinclair was never a part of a Test squad that triumphed, he did achieve three of his six first-class hundreds in the United Kingdom. In addition to the five-match series that New Zealand played against the touring Australian team in 1966–1967 and the short tour that New Zealand took to Australia in 1967–1968, he captained New Zealand in three Test matches: the second and third Tests that New Zealand played against England in 1965–1966 and the first Test that New Zealand played against India in 1967–1968. In 1968, he called time on his career as an international cricket player so that he could concentrate on his profession.

His highest score in a Test match was 138, which he achieved in 345 minutes when playing against South Africa in Auckland in 1963–1964; the team’s total was only 263 at the time.

During the 1964–1955 season, he played a test match against Pakistan at Lahore. He scored 130 runs in the first innings of the match, and then he took two wickets in 10 overs.

In 2010, he was honored by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association by being named the organization’s first patron. He was chosen as a Legend of Wellington Sport in the year 2015.
