Lee Zeldin: An American lawyer and politician, has been detained?
An spokesperson with the Department of Justice said on Thursday that a judge made the decision that the individual who is suspected of trying to stab Representative Lee Zeldin as he was speaking on stage at a campaign event would not be freed from jail at this time. On Thursday, David Jakubonis, 43 years old, appeared before Magistrate Court Marian Payson in the Western District of New York for a bail hearing; however, the judge determined that they required additional information and denied him bail. This information was provided by a statement released by a spokesman for the Department of Justice named Barbara Burns.
Payson allegedly made a request to examine tapes of both the incident itself and Jakubonis’ post-arrest interview with the cops, as stated by Burns in the statement. Payson also allegedly made this request. On July 21, as Zeldin was delivering a lecture in Fairport, New York, a man walked up on stage “and tried to stab” Zeldin.
The statement claims that the Republican lawmaker “grabbed the wrist of the attacker to stop him until several others assisted in dragging the perpetrator down to the ground.” According to Zeldin’s campaign, the congressman returned to the stage in order to continue his statements after the accused criminal had been brought into custody.
According to Burns, Jakubonis was first held at the state level, but he was eventually freed on his own recognizance after having fulfilled the conditions of his release. However, after the incident, he was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a member of Congress by the federal government. The United States Attorney for Western New York, Trini E. Ross, said that Jakubonis approached the congressman, held out a keychain that had two sharp points toward him, and then grabbed the congressman’s arm. On the 24th of August, he is scheduled to appear in court for a status conference.
