His mother was an Avon representative in the past, while his father sold insurance for Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. His father also worked for Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. It is believed that his great-grandfather worked as a slave. His family, along with millions of other African-American families, relocated to the West Coast during the second phase of the “Great Migration,” and in 1949, they made Los Angeles their permanent home. This migration occurred during the time period between 1910 and 1930.
Cochran came from a prosperous family that emphasized the importance of his being self-sufficient, well-educated, and unprejudiced. As a result, he attended public schools and did very well in his studies.

After being moved to action by Thurgood Marshall and his monumental victory in the case known as “Brown v. Board of Education,” he decided to pursue a career in the legal profession. In 1963, after successfully completing the bar exam, Johnnie Cochran began his career as an assistant district attorney in Los Angeles. One of his first high-profile clients was the comedian Lenny Bruce, whom he defended against obscenity charges in 1964 and whose case was among his first high-profile victories. After a couple of years, Cochran began working as an attorney in private practice with Gerald Lenoir. Later, he went on to establish his own law office in Los Angeles under the name “Cochran, Atkins & Evans.”
