Ron Still: Ron Still, a former Portland police chief, died at the age of 90?

Ron Still, who served as the police chief of Portland, Oregon, for many years and ran for mayor in the 1980s, died away on Friday due to natural causes. According to his eldest daughter, he had reached the age of 90 and was still living in Lake Oswego.

In 1954, Still became a patrolman with the Portland Police Bureau after joining the agency. By 1981, he had worked his way up to the post of bureau head, having been selected by the mayor at the time, Frank Ivancie, to take over for Bruce Baker, who had stepped down after reaching retirement age. During Still’s tenure at the FBI, the agency distributed Trail Blazers trading cards including crime-fighting strategies on the backs of the cards.

Still’s oldest daughter, Darolyn Augusta, said that there were police bureau personnel of all levels present at the Benson Hotel for her father’s retirement party. The event was held in honor of Still’s retirement. She made the statement, “Dad had the cops on his side all the time.” He was an effective commander of his troops.

Pat, who had been married to Still for 69 years, passed away in January. His legacy lives on via his three children, as well as many grandkids and great-grandchildren.

Ron Still: What does he do for living? His Career?

In 1954, Still became a patrolman with the Portland Police Bureau after joining the agency. By 1981, he had worked his way up to the post of bureau head, having been selected by the mayor at the time, Frank Ivancie, to take over for Bruce Baker, who had stepped down after reaching retirement age. During Still’s tenure at the FBI, the agency distributed Trail Blazers trading cards including crime-fighting strategies on the backs of the cards.

Ivancie and Still also advocated for a seven-point “War on Crime,” which, according to a deputy city attorney at the time, was largely ineffective due to the fact that some of its components were illegal or already existed as other laws. Despite this, Ivancie and Still continued to advocate for the “War on Crime.” Still held to the position that the platform was read improperly.

Still had already resigned from his position as police chief at the age of 52 after serving the department for a total of 30 years by the time a bartender by the name of Bud Clark deposed Ivancie as mayor in 1984.

In 1985, when Still resigned as police chief of Portland, Clark replaced him with Penny Harrington, the city’s first female police chief. Then, in 1988, Still challenged Clark for the position of mayor, which forced Clark into a runoff election in November.

Still centered his campaign on issues of criminality and drug abuse in Portland, and he harshly criticized Clark, whom he had previously referred to as a “little leprechaun.”

In spite of this, Clark was able to maintain his hold on the seat, garnering almost 59 percent of the vote in the general election. Clark died in February.
