Daniel Webster’s Biography, Career/Education and Achievements

Daniel Webster was an American orator and politician who was born on January 18, 1782, in Salisbury, New Hampshire, and passed away on October 24, 1852, in Marshfield, Massachusetts. Webster was a prominent lawyer before the United States Supreme Court and served as a United States congressman (1813–17, 1823–27), a United States senator (1827–41, 1845–50), and the United States secretary of state. Webster died in Marshfield, Massachusetts (1841–43, 1850–52). He is most known for being an ardent patriot and a champion of commercial interests during the time of Jacksonian agrarianism. This earned him a great deal of notoriety.

When Webster was originally appointed Secretary of State, one of his primary responsibilities was to negotiate resolutions to a number of long-standing disagreements with Great Britain. He was instrumental in securing the historic Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 between the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition to resolving the dispute over the Maine line, the treaty also contained an extradition language that served as a template for subsequent accords and enhanced the United States’ role in the fight against the African slave trade. In addition, the agreement marked the beginning of a period of reconciliation between the United States and Mexico, which made it possible for the government of the United States to concentrate on westward development.

Webster provided diplomatic protection to United States missionaries serving overseas, and he arrogated the Monroe Doctrine’s authority to apply to the Hawaiian Islands.

In 1843, he had to leave from his position as Secretary of State owing to financial troubles as well as a dispute with President Tyler over the annexation of Texas. Webster was a staunch opponent of this action.
