Muir graduated from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991. He then attended the neighborhood Ithaca College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in May 1995. David Muir returned to his hometown after completing his schooling and accepted a position as a journalist and anchorperson at the organization where he had worked as a high school intern. He worked at WTVH-TV for five years to the end before moving to Boston to work at WCVB TV in the same capacity.
