Andy Jassy aka Andrew R. Jassy (born January 13, 1968) is the CEO of Amazon Web Services in the United States. He also owns a minority stake in the National Hockey League’s Seattle Kraken. Jassy has been the CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) since its founding in 2003. On July 5, 2021, he will succeed Jeff Bezos as CEO of Amazon; Bezos will become executive chairman.

Jassy is the son of Scarsdale, New York residents Margery and Everett L. Jassy. He is Jewish and of Hungarian descent. His father was a senior partner and chairman of the management committee of the New York-based corporate law firm Dewey Ballantine. Jassy was born and raised in Scarsdale, where she graduated from Scarsdale High School.
Jassy earned an MBA from Harvard Business School after graduating with honors, cum laude, from Harvard College in government and serving as the advertising manager of The Harvard Crimson.
Career journey of Andy Jassy
After graduating, Jassy worked for five years before enrolling in an MBA program. He worked as a project manager for MBI, a collectibles company, and subsequently co-founded and sold a company with an MBI colleague.
In 1997, he and several other Harvard MBA classmates joined Amazon. His first job was as a marketing manager. He and Jeff Bezos came up with the idea for Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud computing platform that started in 2006. AWS and its 57-person staff were led by Jassy.
The Financial Times selected Jassy as a Person of the Year in March 2016. Jassy was promoted from senior vice president to CEO of AWS a month later. That year, Jassy earned $36.6 million.

Jassy received $175,000 in basic income in 2020 for his position as CEO of AWS, as well as a restricted stock unit award of 4,023 Amazon shares (a value of $12,104,844.93 as of July 26, 2020) with vesting beginning in 2023. In April 2018, he was additionally awarded 10,000 restricted stock units, with 37.5 percent vesting in 2021, 12.5 percent in 2022, 37.5 percent in 2023, and 12.5 percent in 2024.

At the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel in 1997, Jassy married Elana Rochelle Caplan, a fashion designer for Eddie Bauer and a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. Elana’s cousin, New York Rabbi James Brandt, officiated their wedding. Both of their fathers were senior partners at Dewey Ballantine, a law company. They are the parents of two children.
They live in a 10,000-square-foot house in Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, which they purchased for $3.1 million in 2009. Jassy was reported to have purchased a $6.7 million 5,500-square-foot house in Santa Monica, California in October 2020.
