Maclaren signed his first professional contract with Pert Glory at the start of the 2013-14 season, committing to a three-year agreement. He made his debut with the main team in a 3-1 loss against Adelaide United. His first professional goal came in a 1-0 victory over Melbourne City on October 27, 2013, and he scored his second the following month.
In January of 2018, Maclaren was loaned to Scottish club Hibernian in the hopes that more playing time would increase his chances of being picked by Australia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On 31 January 2019, Maclaren signed a contract with A-League team Melbourne City FC that would keep him there until May 2022.
