Richard Marc Evonitz

Richard Marc Evonitz was a kidnapper, a rapist, and a serial killer. He was responsible for the deaths of three young children in Richland County, South Carolina, and he later raped and kidnapped a female victim who was 15 years old.

Evonitz was thought to be responsible for other murders, and just before he took his own life, he admitted to his sister that he had committed a dozen horrific acts.

Richard Marc Evonitz was a dedicated spouse who took pleasure in dealing with animals and making other people laugh. He was also quite the comedian. His wife, Marie Crowly, just could not fathom the possibility that her husband was a felon.

Despite the fact that abductions by strangers are relatively uncommon, the picture of a shadowy figure stealing youngsters in broad daylight has imprinted itself indelibly on the public’s consciousness. The majority of kidnappings of children take place at the hands of somebody they are familiar with, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

However, there is such a brazen kidnapper, the kind who works during the daytime hours, and they really exist. Take for example the serial killer and kidnapper Richard Evonitz, whose story will be told in the upcoming Oxygen special “Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story.” Evonitz is responsible for Kara Robinson’s abduction.

On June 24, 2002, Robinson, who was 15 years old at the time, was at a friend’s house in Columbia, South Carolina, watering plants when her companion came into the house. The New York Daily News reports that Evonitz drew up next to the woman and started a conversation with her on the pretense that he was selling magazines. After that, he allegedly brandished a gun at her and forced her into a Rubbermaid container that was located in the trunk of his car.

More of him

At the time, the Associated Press reported that detectives had immediately unearthed evidence that Evonitz was responsible for the deaths of three girls in Virginia: Sofia Silva, 16, Kristin Lisk, and her sister Kati Lisk. All three of the victims were found in their homes.

On September 9, 1996, Evonitz kidnapped Silva, who was 16 years old and had aspirations of entering cosmetology school. Silva was working on her schoolwork at the doorway of her family’s home at the time. The New York Daily News reports that her older sister was inside but had no idea what was going on since she had not heard anything. Before Silva’s body was found five weeks later in a marsh, the investigation was first classified as a search for a missing person rather than an abduction investigation.

Soccer player Kristin Lisk, who was 15 years old and wrapping up her first year of high school, was in her freshman year. According to a report published in the regional daily The Free Lance Star in the year 2002, Kati Lisk, her younger sister, had just turned 12 years old at the time and enjoyed painting and playing the clarinet. The sisters were last seen in their yard on May 1, 1997, before they vanished.

A few days later, their bodies were found floating in a river after they had died there. According to the New York Daily News, detectives believed that Silva’s death was connected to the other deaths.

Despite this, not much headway was made in the inquiry before Robinson pointed detectives in the direction of Evonitz. During their investigation of his home, the authorities allegedly found evidence tying him to all three murders, as reported by the Free Lance-Star.

In addition to the other firearms, ropes, and other items associated with murder, notes indicating that Evonitz was searching for further victims were found. The Associated Press reports that the notes contained the addresses and descriptions of two other young women.

Extra Resources and Information

One of the women pictured in the notes reportedly told The Free Lance-Star that “It’s sort of unsettling that this individual was out there starring at me.” This information was obtained from the Associated Press. “I am perplexed as to the reason why he did not notice me.” In addition to the other firearms, ropes, and other items associated with murder, notes indicating that Evonitz was searching for further victims were found. The Associated Press reports that the notes contained the addresses and descriptions of two other young women.

Evonitz eventually left his home and headed to Florida when Robinson made his getaway. The Washington Post reports that he got in touch with his sister along the way and admitted to killing someone and committing “more atrocities than he can recollect.”

Evonitz was arrested by the authorities in Florida three days after he abducted Robinson. After a high-speed chase, which concluded with Evonitz shooting himself and dying, authorities were able to apprehend Evonitz.

It has never been determined whether or if Evonitz was engaged in a number of killings greater than three.

You may learn more about this incident and Robinson’s narrative by watching the documentary “Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Tale.”
