Biography, Career/Education and Achievements
When Young Guru was a teenager, he worked at a community center where he gave lessons on African history. This is where he got the name “Young Guru.” While he first started working as a DJ when he was still a teenager, he also used his real name. Young Guru became interested in music technology after purchasing his own amplifiers, lighting, and microphones in the early 1990s. This kindled his interest in the field. While he was still a student at Howard University, he was able to see the early stages of the establishment of Bad Boy Records and get some of his first technical positions. In 1996, he started his career as a DJ in Washington, DC, where he met the singer and rapper Nonchalant. At the time, she was touring in support of one of her top 20 singles, and he became her tour DJ. Young Guru, who as a youngster had taken piano lessons, utilized the money he obtained from the tour to pay a six-month music recording course at Omega Recording Studios in Rockville, Maryland. This course had a significant influence on him and he credits it with helping him become the artist he is today. After finishing work on Omega, Young Guru engineered the second album that Nonchalant recorded. However, the album was never released because its producer, Chucky Thompson (Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans), saw the young engineer’s promise and urged him to come and work with him in Washington, DC. In 1999, Young Guru launched his solo career and relocated to New York City. There, he collaborated with Memphis Bleek and Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie on their respective Madd Rapper projects. The latter was signed to Roc-A-Fella Records, which is what brought Young Guru and Jay-Z together in the first place.
