Fernández was a law student at the National University of La Plata, which is also where she first became acquainted with Kirchner. 1975 was the year when she and Kirchner tied the knot. After the military junta took control of Argentina a year later, the couple left La Plata and headed towards Kirchner’s homeland of Rio Gallegos, which is located in the province of Santa Cruz in the Patagonian region of Patagonia. After the country’s restoration to democratic rule in 1983, they both became involved in political politics and founded law offices in the new country. After serving as a provincial delegate to the Justicialist (Peronist) Party (PJ) convention in 1985, Fernández de Kirchner was subsequently elected to the provincial legislature of her home province. In 1987, her husband was elected to the position of mayor of Rio Gallegos, and in 1991, when her husband was elected to the first of three consecutive four-year terms as provincial governor, she became the first lady of Santa Cruz. Her husband served in this capacity for a total of nine years.
Fernández de Kirchner twice represented Santa Cruz in the Argentine Senate (1995–97 and 2001–05). In addition, she was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1997 to 2001. During her time in Congress, she was one of the PJ’s most outspoken opponents of the Peronist government of President Carlos Menem, casting several votes in opposition to the legislative measures proposed by that administration. On May 25, 2003, her husband became president when Menem withdrew from that year’s presidential contest since he was expected to lose to Kirchner in a second-round runoff. Menem faced a definite defeat to Kirchner in the runoff.
In 2005, Kirchner was engaged in a war with Eduardo Duhalde, who had been as president of Argentina before, for control of the PJ in the essential province of Buenos Aires, which was home to 38 percent of the Argentine population at the time. The conflict reached its zenith in October, when Fernández de Kirchner faced off against Hilda González de Duhalde, who was Duhalde’s spouse, in an election for a senate seat in the Buenos Aires region. During that election, Fernández de Kirchner received 46% of the vote, handily defeating González de Duhalde, who received just 20% of the vote. Although Fernández de Kirchner’s husband was able to gain recognition as the undisputed leader of Peronism as a result of the high-profile victory, it not only reaffirmed Fernández de Kirchner’s growing political influence but also helped to insulate her against charges of inexperience during her own run for the presidency in 2007.
