She worked as a substitute teacher in the Washington Elementary School District for the first seven years of her life. The next year, in 2002, she launched her career in politics by becoming a member of the Arizona Green party. After some time, Kyrsten became a member of the Arizona Democratic Party in the year 2004.

Sinema’s campaign for a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives in 2002, when she was an independent candidate, resulted in her finishing in last place. After becoming a member of the Democratic Party in 2004, she and David Lujan were successful in winning the nomination for the 15th congressional district of Arizona in the Democratic primary. Kyrsten won the election for the Arizona Senate seat in 2020 by a margin of 63 to 37 percent of the vote, defeating the Republican candidate Bob Thomas.

Barack Obama, who was the previous President of the United States, appointed Kyrsten as one of the 32 state lawmakers to serve on the White House Health Reform Task Force. One year later, Time magazine’s list of the 40 Under 40 included her among its ranks. In January of 2012, Sinema made public her intention to run for the United States Congress in the 9th congressional district. After winning by a margin of 4 percentage points, she started office in January 2013 as the newly elected official.

On September 28, 2017, Sinema made the public announcement that she is one of the contenders for the seat in the United States Senate reserved for Class I. After she was sworn in as a member of the United States Senate on January 3, 2019, she made history by becoming the first woman to ever represent the state of Arizona in the United States Senate.
